Patrick Dintino’s latest series of Spectrum Paintings showing in February at Andrea Schwartz Gallery are based on the colors of endangered species found primarily in North America. This ground-breaking solo show will coincide with the release of his first book of paintings from the last seven years called “Patrick Dintino, Spectrum Painting.” By sampling the color and light of the subject in its natural habitat the paintings translate subtleties of diversity in each distinct species. With paint, brush and canvas he engages in a performance similar to a scientific recording of identity, yet the spontaneity of vigorous brush strokes renders his personal visual experience in paint and color. The result is more than simply warning viewers of our unbridled impact on the earth. The colorful blends radiate specific signatures that are exalted as treasures of evolution. Like a modern Darwin, he captures what makes each species a valuable gift to us. The 4’ x 8’ ‘Florida Panther’ glistens with golden fur while reflecting lush grasslands in its penetrating eyes. In the 4’ x 10’ ‘Coral Reef’ the exotic color combinations pulsate with iridescent sea life as refracted by hues of the deep. Through these monuments to diversity we can taste the rare and exquisite flavors of what nature has to offer. This series of spectrum paintings is the most specific to date, which act as a testament to the efforts of humanity to preserve these symbols of self realization. As they breath with colored life they remind us of the delicate balance between our motivations and what we truly value.
